Plum Village Foundation Hong Kong was founded in November 2008 as a non-profit making, charitable, religious and educational organization to promote the teachings and practice of Buddhism in the tradition of Thich Nhat Hanh and Plum Village, France.
Zen Master, Thich Nhat Hanh’s, and Plum Village’s International Buddhist Sangha’s first teaching trip to Hong Kong was in the year 2001 and the second trip in 2002. After 2002, efforts were made by practitioners who had come to Plum Village, to hold meditation and mindfulness practices in Hong Kong under various forms and names, such as Friends of Plum Village group. Such a group was led by Ven. Thich Chan Phap An with a delegation of Plum Village monastics who came to Hong Kong for a teaching trip in April 2006.
After the third visit of Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh and the Plum Village Sangha to Hong Kong in May 2007, many practice activities have been held regularly for Hong Kong residents by lay Sangha members, under the guidance of Ven. Thich Chan Phap Kham. Bi-weekly meditation practice is held on the 1st and the 3rd Friday evening of the month; Monthly Day of Mindfulness is held on the 4th Saturday of the month at Hong Kong Institute of Education, Tai Po; quarterly weekend retreat is held at Kadoorie Agricultural Research Centre, HKU (now known as The Kadoorie Institute, Shek Kong Centre, HKU) in Yuen Long, NT; quarterly activities for school children, workshops for social and health professionals. Plum Village Hong Kong Company Limited – an organization formed to help organize the visit in May 2007 – served as organizer for these activities. Plum Village Hong Kong Company Limited ceased its operations in October 2008 and re-manifested under the new form as Plum Village Foundation (Hong Kong) Limited. From November 2008, Plum Village Foundation Hong Kong Limited has served as the organizer and the administrative body for all activities conducted by Plum Village International Sangha in Hong Kong.

In February 2009, Plum Village Mindfulness Practice Center in Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon was opened as a practice center for monastics and lay people in the tradition of Thich Nhat Hanh and Plum Village in Hong Kong. The center was a rented flat of 1500 square feet, with a big room in the front used as the meditation hall and a room in the back as the residence for monastics. Four monks stayed there to guide the practice and to carry out the activities, which included daily walking meditation session at 6:00 PM and sitting meditation session at 7:30 PM. The bi-weekly Friday Night Practice became the weekly Friday Night Practice and was held at the center, with regular attendance of 20-30 people per week, from 7:30 PM to 9:30 PM. With this regular Friday practice, the center was considered as a second home for many practitioners. Activities had been held there until April 10, 2011, when Plum Village Hong Kong moved to its new home at Lotus Pond Temple and Bamboo Forest Monastery in Ngong Ping Monastery, under the new manifestation as Asian Institute of Applied Buddhism. The Plum Village Mindfulness Practice Center in Tsim Sha Tsui ceased all its operation on April 15, 2011.
The Asian Institute of Applied Buddhism was officially opened on May 1, 2012 when Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh and a Plum Village International Monastic Sangha visited Hong Kong from April 25 – May 11, 2011. Weekly Day of Mindfulness for the public is held every Sunday at AIAB.
